Oslo will have world's first all-electric public transport system. In the race for a better environment and population health, Norwegians are on the final straight.
Emission-free transport has become a priority for Oslo and it intends to fully introduce it by the end of 2023. The Norwegian capital already has a system of electric trains, ferries and streetcars, as well as several buses. And it is the process of replacing diesel buses with 450 new electric vehicles that will last until the end of this year and cost the city about million.
In a recent report, the UN warns that air pollution is the biggest threat to European public health and accounted for some 300,000 premature deaths in 2019. Oslo has decided that these types of warnings can't be ignored, and has therefore set its sights on an electric transportation initiative.
Residents themselves have also significantly shifted to electric vehicles, which already outnumber combustion cars. Public transport is a step towards Oslo becoming the world's first zero-emission city in 2030. And despite the side effects and problems that have yet to be worked out-such as the growing number of old power batteries, for example-the road to an environmentally and people-friendly one is the best alternative.
Unfortunately, our imagination is not so great to attribute a similar level of solutions to any city in Poland, where electric windmills scare.
