Research for the use of hemp primarily in food and fiber production is taking place in all Australian states to gather data on the performance of the varieties being tested.
The results of the first year of testing conducted in Hamilton, Victoria, showed that Ferimon 12 (a French variety), and the Polish variety Henola, were the best performers. In other trials, Ferimon 12 and the Canadian variety CRS-1 achieved the best results at sites in Maaoupe, in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, while Henola proved to be the best in South Australia.
Australian researchers record yield and quality performance and seek optimal planting practices under different soil and weather conditions across the country. The program aims to study hemp crops for their suitability for industry and the environment.
